Beach camping on the Baltic Sea

Spending the weekend camping on the Baltic Sea in the quiet little beach villages that form along the coast of the Bay of Lübeck in northern Germany is the perfect combination of relaxation and adventure.

Whether you’re visiting with friends, as a family or looking for a romantic getaway, it’s very easy to find a little piece of paradise to call your own.

The main holiday resorts along the Bay include Großenbrode, Dahme, Kellenhusen, Grömitz, Pelzerhaken, Sierksdorf, Haffkrug, Scharbeutz, Timmendorfer Strand, Niendorf and Lübeck-Travemüde, as well as other small towns. I was lucky enough to spend this past weekend with a group of friends in Scharbeutz, located approximately 20 kilometers north of the main city of Lübeck.

We booked a spot at the Seepferdchen Campingplatz, or Seahorse Campground, which provided us with a great combination of natural living and modern conveniences within a short walking distance to the beach. Plus, waking up to the sounds of nature and warm summer sun was the perfect start to the day! The staff was very friendly and helpful for any questions or concerns we had. I would definitely recommend it for anyone wishing to camp at Scharbeutz, with the only downside being we weren’t right next to the beach.

We were lucky enough to have sunny weather during our visit so we spent most of our time at the beach enjoying each other’s company, playing beach volleyball and going for short swims. The especially nice thing about the beaches was that they were broken down according to various uses. For example, there were specific sections for grilling, playing sports such as football or volleyball, kids beaches and even a beach for dogs to enjoy! Lucky for me, we hung out at the beach section with volleyball nets, which happened to be right next to the dog beach. They were so cute running around and splashing in the water!

The beach itself is also very pleasant with a fine, white sand and clear water. During the day the tide was out and you could walk out relatively far while it was still shallow. There also wasn’t any debris in the water and it was very nice to swim around. The water was a bit cold, but offered a refreshing wake-up in comparison to the hot summer sun.

After having a delicious barbecue together at the campground for dinner, we would go down to the beach as the sun was setting, bringing a few drinks and some music. It was so nice to just sit out under the stars and listen to the waves crashing. The perfect way to end the day.

Also very nice about Scharbeutz is the 6-kilometer long promenade that has been built along the coast filled with restaurants, cafes and shops. A portion of the promenade that runs along the dunes is for coastal protection, but the long beach grass that grows there also provides a great aesthetic value and gives you a real sense that you are on a beach holiday. The entire promenade is built only of natural, local materials, which blends perfectly with the current landscape as well.
